Pre Registration Will Close For The 2013 Parkland Dash 5K,10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk On Thursday. Day Of Registration Will Take Place Beginning At 6:00AM At Pine Trails Park On Race Day.
The City of Parkland will be holding the 2013 Parkland Dash 5K, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk Presented by Northwest Medical Center to benefit Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society on October 20, 2013 at 7:00am. The race will take place at Pine Trails Park located at 10555 Trails End Parkland, Florida. To register please visit www.cityofparkland.org and click on the race registration link. Pre-Registration must be completed by October 17th or race day registration will be available beginning at 6:00AM. Day of registration will take place beginning at 6:00AM at Pine Trails Park on Race Day. Advance Packet Pickup is strongly recommended and can be completed at Sports Authority located at 9188 Wiles Road, Coral Springs, FL on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Participants can choose either a certified 5K course, 10K course or a 1 mile fun run/walk. 5K and 10K participants will be scored and timed by Accuchip who will be providing disposable tags for all participants. The one mile fun run/walk will be timed and can be enjoyed by individuals or families. Strollers are welcome for all courses. T-shirts will be provided for the first 400 pre-registered participants and food will be available following the race. Awards will be given for overall winners, masters and individual age groups. The Library’s Collaborative Learning Space is an ideal place for groups to meet for study and project preparation - it’s perfect for students and teens. With the large screen monitor you can use the computer provided or plug in your own laptop and collaborate, share, demonstrate, or just work big. Located in the Library’s Teen Spot Room, the space includes collaboration oriented workspace and seating, related technology, and whiteboard. Seek the Unknown @ Parkland Library for Teen Read Week

Teen Read Week (October 13-19), 2013 is a time to celebrate reading for fun while encouraging teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms —books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks and more! It is also a great opportunity to encourage teens to become regular library users. The Parkland Library will celebrate Teen Read Week with giveaways and a fun aimed at encouraging teens to visit the library and read for the fun of it! Middle and High School kids can come by the library during this week with their library card to pick up a gift and check out some great books. On Friday, October 18th at 4:00pm teens are welcome to make a potion bottle that would be found in Harry Potter’s classroom or Frankenstein’s lab. Lawyers In The Library

Lawyers and libraries are joining forces to increase your access to justice. During celebrate pro bono week, Florida lawyers will be present at the Parkland Library to meet and speak with members of the public about issues of access to courts and justice. Lawyers will also provide guidance and information on referral to legal resources for attendees. October 23 will be Pro Bono Day at the Parkland Library. This totally free program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkland Library, 6620 N. University Dr., Parkland, FL. For more information, please call 954-757-4200. The City of Parkland is excited to bring back the 5th Annual Hayride and Bonfire at the Equestrian Center on November 8, 2013 from 7pm-9pm, presented by TD Bank, Northwest Medical Center and Marrecau & Rodriguez Orthodontics. This event is open to a limited number of Parkland families and pre-registration is required. Food Drive

The City of Parkland wants to give back to those in need during this holiday season. We will donate all food collected to Feeding South Florida. For the 6th consecutive year, Parkland staff will be collecting food from October 7, 2013 until November 15, 2013. The holidays are just around the corner and for Parkland City employees that means the start of helping those less fortunate during this holiday season. The City of Parkland has partnered for the 5th Annual Costume Drive benefitting Free Costumes for Kids. Please package the costume together in a plastic bag with the size and gender labeled on the bag. The City invites all residents young and old to donate used costumes. Teen Halloween Dance

The Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the YMCA will be having a Teen Halloween Dance. Teen’s ages 11-16 are invited to participated in this spooky event. The evening will consist of music, games, tattoos, fortunetelling, candy and more. Come dressed in costume for this event. Bring all of your friends. The event tickets will cost $7.00 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets will be sold at the Parkland Amphitheater, the YMCA and the Westglades Middle School Cafeteria. Halloween Festival

The City of Parkland presents their first ever Halloween Festival sponsored by Northwest Medical Center. Please join us on Saturday, October 26th, 2013 from 5pm-8pm at the Equestrian Center. Activities will include an interactive DJ with dancing, stilt walkers, photo opportunities with costumed characters, carnival games with prizes, pumpkin patch, pumpkin decorating, food trucks and Trunk or Treat from 5-6:30 presented by The Parkland Mom’s Club. Tickets for carnival games will be on sale at the event (cash only), all proceeds will go to the Parkland Teen Advisory Group. It’s sure to be a “Spooktacular” time! World Planting Day

Forgotten Soldier Outreach Project

The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department hosted by the Teen Advisory Group will be participating in the Forgotten Soldier Outreach Collection Drive from Monday, October 28th to Thursday, November 14th. Our goal is to continually encourage the men and women who are abroad fighting for our great nation. Our hope is to inspire hope, strength and courage while they are separated from loved ones, families and friends. The outreach is committed to the American soldiers for as long as they are deployed. Items needed include: lip balm, dental floss, playing cards, slim Jims, batteries, travel toiletries. Parkland Walkabouts Walking Program

Life is a walk in the park! The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department has a seven-month walking program sponsored by Northwest Medical Center. This program aids participants in walking their way to an overall better fitness level and quality of life. The group meets on the first and third Friday each month at 9AM, alternating monthly between Pine Trails and Terramar Parks. Participants are encouraged to walk on their own on other days and will be rewarded for participation. The program is free of charge and is open to all 18 and over. Registration is required; however, you may join at any time. (The next meeting time will be at 9AM on Friday, November 15th also at Pine Trails Park by the concession stand.) The food trucks will be on site and begin serving food at 6:00PM. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to join your fellow parrot head friends and neighbors for this spectacular FREE family event and performance. The Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with Aston Gardens will be having our seventh annual Winter Talent Show for residents of Aston Gardens on Monday, December 2nd from 7:15PM to 8:15PM. Auditions for the show will be held on Wednesday, November 6th, Thursday, November 7th and Friday, November 8th. All ages and talents are welcomed to participate in this holiday event. We are looking for people to perform by dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. You must register for a time slot to audition in advance. You must audition to the music you would like to perform in the show. You are responsible for providing your own music. Senior Grant Class: Bird Watching

Come learn about the life history of birds, how to identify them and listen to the sounds they make! This class is free of charge to Parkland residents 62 and older.
