City of Parkland & Parkland YMCA To Hold Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

Please join the City of Parkland and the Parkland YMCA Family Center for a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Parkland Family YMCA, 10559 Trails End, on January 17, 2014 from 8:00 am until 10:00am. The event will feature a live simulcast of the 10th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspirational Breakfast featuring former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Congressman Andrew Young. City of Parkland Annual Scholarship Applications Now Available

The City of Parkland annually awards scholarships to Parkland residents for post-secondary education. The scholarship is in recognition of outstanding community or civic service. This scholarship is made possible through The City of Parkland, the Parkland Education Advisory Board and the Parkland Teen Advisory Group and is open to all Parkland students in public school, private school or homeschool students. The completed application and all supporting materials must be received by 4:00pm on January 31, 2014. Film Viewing and Discussion: Big Night

The movie stars Tony Shalhoub, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. A failing Italian restaurant run by two brothers gambles on one special night to try to save the business. Primo and Secondo are two brothers who have emigrated from Italy to open an Italian restaurant in America. Primo is the irascible and gifted chef determined not to squander his talent on making the routine dishes that customers expect. Secondo is the smooth front-man, trying to keep the restaurant financially afloat. Healthy Creative Cooking

Parkland Library Reading Buddies

Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? Reading Buddies is a cross-age, effective method of energizing young readers. The Parkland Juniorettes have partnered with the Parkland Library to help students that are struggling with reading. The Parkland Juniorettes are high school girls dedicated to making a difference. When younger students read with older students literacy skills are picked up in an enjoyable manner. Building partnerships between our high achieving, high school students and elementary age children is an excellent way to reinforce life long reading success. The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department and Northwest Medical Center present Lawn Croquet. This activity is held the third Wednesday of each month from 10:00am to 11:30am in Pine Trails Park, 10555 Trails End, at field #4. Croquet is a fantastic way to get outdoors, meet up with friends old and new, get some exercise and socialize all together. Beginners and advanced players are welcome. Participants should wear flat shoes and bring water and sunscreen. There is no fee to play, all equipment is included and the activity is open to all those aged 21 and over. Shed all that holiday weight and start off the New Year right by walking! The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department has a seven-month walking program sponsored by Northwest Medical Center. This program aids participants in walking their way to an overall better fitness level and quality of life. The group meets on the first and third Friday each month at 9:00am, alternating monthly between Pine Trails and Terramar Parks. The program is free of charge and open to all aged 21 and over (no strollers please). Advanced registration is required; however you may join at any time. (The next meeting after this one will be at 9:00am on Friday, February 7 at Terramar Park, meeting by the large pavilion). This particular class will be a CPR Certification Class. The class will take place from 6:30pm-9:30pm. Ever worry what you would do if you had a fire in the house? This is a great opportunity to learn how to use a fire extinguisher as well as go over terrific tips in order to be better prepared and avoid future accidents or emergencies. We will learn straight from experts at Coral Springs Fire Department and participants will be able to handle a fire extinguisher and put out a real fire to be sure to get the feel of it. This program is free of charge for Parkland residents aged 62 and over who are currently registered with Parks & Recreation. March Adult Paid Trip & Senior Grant Class Registration
January 24 from 5:00pm through January 27 at 9:00AM

Marvelous March begins with a trip to see behind the scenes at the horseraces on Saturday, March 22nd; we’ll tour Gulfstream Park's barn area, see top thoroughbreds work out and catch a race or two. This day’s excursion is open to all 50+ regardless of residency and will cost $26 per person which covers the tour, a hot dog or slice of pizza, soda and $2 voucher to put towards a race in the afternoon for which we'll have reserved seating.

Our March madness continues with an Extreme Saving class on Tuesday, March 25th from 10:00am-11:30am in which we’ll learn the art of couponing, where to get senior discounts shopping, what a groupon is and many other helpful tips to maximize your saving$.

AARP Driver Safety Program

The AARP Driver Safety Course is a 6-hour refresher course that has helped millions of drivers sharpen their defensive driving skills. Participants of the course are generally 50 and older, but anyone is permitted to register for the course. All participants will receive a certificate and those 55 and older may be able to submit the certificate to their insurance company to receive a discount. The cost to attend the class is $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. Checks are written out to AARP. Advance Registration is required. The City of Parkland, Marrecau & Rodriguez Orthodontics, North West Medical Center and the Goddard School is excited to bring back Snowfest at Terramar Park on January 26, 2014 from 11:00am-2:00pm. There will be 10 tons of snow, an outdoor skating rink, a 30 foot snow slide, food trucks and more! This event is open to Parkland residents only and space is limited. Pre-registration begins on Monday, December 30, 2013 and ends on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 2:00pm. Registration can be done online through Web Trac on the City of Parkland website www.cityofparkland.org or in person at the Parkland Amphitheater.
