Fireworks Safety Tips
The Fourth of July is almost here, and it brings up questions on fireworks and safety. Many types of fireworks are not legal but find their way into local use anyway. Always buy your sparklers and Fourth of July items from a reputable source, such as a long standing community business.
Every year around this time we respond to emergencies and serious injuries caused by mishandling and unsafe practices with fireworks. Unfortunately, many people believe that “it will never happen to me” and get caught by complacency. We want you and your family to remain safe and enjoy your holiday season, so we’ve pulled together these safety tips for you:
• Never allow your young children to play with or ignite fireworks of any kind! Remember that even sparklers can hurt young children.
• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. It is safer to douse them with water from a hose at a distance then approach what may or may not be an inactive firework.
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person. Watch your children if they are with a group of friends, horseplay can result in serious and permanent injury when fireworks are involved.
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. Many times bottle rockets can set a wooden roof or shed on fire, or dry grass or trash. This fire then spreads to involve homes and vehicles.
• Plan to light fireworks one at a time, and then move back quickly to a safe area.
• Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them off in metal, plastic or glass containers. The effects can cause an explosion that throws pieces of dangerous material into bystanders, including relatives, children and friends.
• After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

Parkland Library To Hold Community Forum

On Tuesday, June 24th a community forum will be held at the Parkland Library, 6620 University Drive, Parkland. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to everyone. Parkland Library Migrates to a New Automation System

After a thorough review of automation operations within the Parkland Library, Library staff realized that a more robust integrated library system was needed if the Library was to be able to meet goals of providing superior service at reduced administrative costs. The staff chose Mandarin Library Automation’s Oasis system because it is extremely affordable, offers complete authority control, a fully hosted cloud option, support for foreign languages, advanced searching features, more robust report options, and 24/7 support. Customers will enjoy using an enhanced online catalog that utilizes predictive technology, produces an authority list to browse from if no hits are found, uses 'see' and 'see also' and has a fantastic add-on feature from Syndetics that allows the searcher to see the book cover. Customers can also see catalog websites and launch into them from the online catalog. The ability to renew, reserve and request items has been simplified and enhanced. The Mandarin system will assist the City of Parkland in delivering exceptional customer service for residents. For more information please contact the Parkland Library at 954-757-4200.

Saturday Afternoon Film: Breaking Away (1979)
Saturday, June 21st 1:00pm

Best friends Dave, Mike, Cyril and Moocher have just graduated from high school. Living in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, they are considered "cutters": the working class of the town so named since most of the middle aged generation, such as their parents, worked at the local limestone quarry, which is now a swimming hole. There is great animosity between the cutters and the generally wealthy Indiana University students, each group who have their own turf in town. The dichotomy is that the limestone was used to build the university, which is now seen as being too good for the locals who built it. Although each of the four is a totally different personality from the other three, they also have in common the fact of being unfocused and unmotivated in life. The one slight exception is Dave. Although he has no job and doesn't know what to do with his life, he is a champion bicycle racer. He idolizes the Italian cycling team so much he pretends to be Italian.  Director: Peter Yates  Writer: Steve Tesich  Stars: Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern |PG, 1 hr. 40 min.  Visit www.cityofparkland.org/library  or call (954) 757-4207 for more information.

CITY NEWS

Hurricane Season Has Begun

June 1st is the beginning of the annual hurricane season, and it is time for everyone to begin preparations for what could be a busy hurricane season. Please remember that every family in Parkland should be prepared to be self-sufficient for the first 3-5 days after a storm. We urge you to sit down and prepare an emergency kit, develop an emergency plan, and stay informed during a hurricane emergency. To assist you, please take advantage of the many resources regarding hurricane preparations starting with the emergency management section of the City of Parkland website at www.cityofparkland.org. There you will find a detailed outline of tips and suggestions on how best to prepare for the 2014 Hurricane Season. The City’s top priority is to ensure the safety of everyone during potentially dangerous weather, and to encourage residents to make preparations for their homes and families. In the event of a storm, the City will regularly post information, messages and updates on the City’s website, Facebook page, Comcast TV Channel 78, 1670 AM, and the information bulletin boards located in Pine Trails Park, City Hall, Terramar Park and Barkland. We will also use our Code Red notification system to deliver information to residents via telephone and text messages. Please take this opportunity to visit the Code Red page in the emergency management section on the City of Parkland website to update your information and include your mobile phone numbers to receive text alerts. Thank you in advance for your preparation, and stay safe this hurricane season.

Summer Safety – Schools Out

As we head into the summer months, it is a good time to discuss traffic safety. Schools will be out for summer break beginning June 5th. This means neighborhood play grounds, parks, yards and even our streets will soon be seeing activity from children. It is time to pay particular attention to our driving and not be distracted by cell phones, texting and other influences that take our attention from the road ahead.

It is time to watch our speed in residential areas as well as on the main City roads of Parkland. As you drive remember children may be sharing the roadways with you, on bikes. Children may not follow the rules of the road as adults know them. When you are driving and encounter a child on a bike expect the unexpected. Slow down when in the same area as a child on a bike and give them room, do not lose sight of the child until you are well clear. Always remember to check behind your vehicle before backing out of your driveway for children on the sidewalk or playing in the driveway. Remember, children may “pop out” at any time or place chasing a ball or each other.

Fresh off a break-up with the guy who was supposed to be “the one,” rock DJ  Dana Drew meets Cody Blue Smith, the ruggedly sexy lead singer of an up and coming rock band.  Their connection is electric, but Cody harbors a dark secret that has kept him from ever having a meaningful relationship.  Dana looks to her best friend, drive time jock Jonny Rock, but he has his own problems…mainly his lust for interns that threatens his marriage and his career.  Dana must decide what she really wants as she tries to balance her confident on-air persona with her desire for true love.  Problem is, she’s not alone.  Dana is being watched, stalked by a listener who plans to make her his…by whatever means necessary.  Lisa Wainland has spent over twenty years in the world of radio. When she's not writing, she does voiceovers for radio and television. Career highlights include interviewing Billy Joel and writing commercials for Howard Stern.  Rock Radio is a 2013 Readers Favorite Award Winner.
