Parkland Library To Hold Community Forum

As the City of Parkland considers the impact that a growing population will have on community services, learning the expectations Parkland’s residents have about their public library is crucial in making decisions as to the direction that library services will be offered in years to come. On Tuesday, June 24th a community forum will be held at the Parkland Library, 6620 University Drive, Parkland. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to everyone. Participants will respond to questions concerning current Library operations as well as have an opportunity to share ideas about Library service in Parkland as Parkland moves into the future. For more information please contact the Parkland Library at 954-757-4200

Parkland Library Migrates to a New Automation System

After a thorough review of automation operations within the Parkland Library, Library staff realized that a more robust integrated library system was needed if the Library was to be able to meet goals of providing superior service at reduced administrative costs. The staff chose Mandarin Library Automation’s Oasis system because it is extremely affordable, offers complete authority control, a fully hosted cloud option, support for foreign languages, advanced searching features, more robust report options, and 24/7 support. Customers will enjoy using an enhanced online catalog that utilizes predictive technology, produces an authority list to browse from if no hits are found, uses 'see' and 'see also' and has a fantastic add-on feature from Syndetics that allows the searcher to see the book cover. Customers can also see catalog websites and launch into them from the online catalog. The ability to renew, reserve and request items has been simplified and enhanced. The Mandarin system will assist the City of Parkland in delivering exceptional customer service for residents. For more information please contact the Parkland Library at 954-757-4200.

Latops For Use In the Parkland Library

The project was underwritten by a grant from the Parkland Friends of the Library. Beginning on June 23rd, Library customers will be able to “borrow” laptop computers at the Parkland Library. Initially, the Library will have three laptops available, and by October 1st, ten (10) laptops will be available. The laptops are for in-library use only, and cannot be taken outside the library. Use of laptop computers require a valid driver’s license and can be used for a total of two hours daily. Desktop computers will continue to be available at the Parkland Library. The laptops will be available for check-out to adults with a valid driver’s license. Library customers will able to use the laptops anywhere within the Library building by connecting to the Library’s free Wi-Fi network. Saturday Afternoon Film: Breaking Away (1979)
Saturday, June 21st 1:00pm

Best friends Dave, Mike, Cyril and Moocher have just graduated from high school. Living in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, they are considered "cutters": the working class of the town so named since most of the middle aged generation, such as their parents, worked at the local limestone quarry, which is now a swimming hole. There is great animosity between the cutters and the generally wealthy Indiana University students, each group who have their own turf in town. The dichotomy is that the limestone was used to build the university, which is now seen as being too good for the locals who built it. Although each of the four is a totally different personality from the other three, they also have in common the fact of being unfocused and unmotivated in life. The one slight exception is Dave. Although he has no job and doesn't know what to do with his life, he is a champion bicycle racer. He idolizes the Italian cycling team so much he pretends to be Italian. Director: Peter Yates Writer: Steve Tesich Stars: Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern |PG, 1 hr. 40 min. Visit www.cityofparkland.org/libraryor call (954) 757-4207 for more information.
