Fireworks Safety Tips
The Fourth of July is almost here, and it brings up questions on fireworks and safety. Many types of fireworks are not legal but find their way into local use anyway. Always buy your sparklers and Fourth of July items from a reputable source, such as a long standing community business.
Every year around this time we respond to emergencies and serious injuries caused by mishandling and unsafe practices with fireworks. Unfortunately, many people believe that “it will never happen to me” and get caught by complacency. We want you and your family to remain safe and enjoy your holiday season, so we’ve pulled together these safety tips for you:
• Never allow your young children to play with or ignite fireworks of any kind! Remember that even sparklers can hurt young children.
• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. It is safer to douse them with water from a hose at a distance then approach what may or may not be an inactive firework.
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person. Watch your children if they are with a group of friends, horseplay can result in serious and permanent injury when fireworks are involved.
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. Many times bottle rockets can set a wooden roof or shed on fire, or dry grass or trash. This fire then spreads to involve homes and vehicles.
• Plan to light fireworks one at a time, and then move back quickly to a safe area.
• Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them off in metal, plastic or glass containers. The effects can cause an explosion that throws pieces of dangerous material into bystanders, including relatives, children and friends.
• After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
