City of Parkland Budget Workshops and Public Hearings

Any and all residents who are interested in the City's proposed budget are invited to attend one of the many workshops and public hearings on the City's Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Proposed Budget. A preliminary review of the budget with the City Commission will take place at the Commission Workshop on August 13th at 6:00pm. As the City has done in the past, Staff will conduct two similar Budget Workshops seeking resident’s input. Staff will provide information and answer any questions that may arise from the preliminary review of the budget on August 6, 2014 at 6:00pm and August 7, 2014 at 9:00am in the City Hall Chambers. The public hearings on the budget are scheduled for September 12th at 6:00pm and September 22nd at 7:00pm in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall. City of Parkland Taking Resident Suggestions For Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Budget

The City of Parkland is now taking resident suggestions for the upcoming 2014-2015 Annual Budget via the City’s website. Residents can visit www.cityofparkland.org and click the Budget Comments link in the left menu bar to be redirected to the appropriate page. 2014 City of Parkland Monster Dash Seeking Sponsors

Following the tremendous success of the 2013 Parkland Dash which saw 550 runners and walkers of all abilities; the 2014 Parkland Dash will be moved closer to Halloween, will be titled the Monster Dash, and will allow participants to race in costumes. This is sure to increase both the visibility of the race, marketing opportunities and the number of participants. The City of Parkland is proud to announce that the beneficiary for this year’s event will be SOS Children’s Villages, and will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014. The City is currently seeking sponsors for what promises to be an amazing event. Please Complete the City of Parkland Library Needs Assessment Survey By August 5th

The City of Parkland Library Community Survey is a tool being used to determine the needs for the future development of the Library. The City Commission commissioned a "Library Needs Assessment" which is the first phase of the Library Master Plan. PGAL has been contracted to perform the assessment and this survey is part of the public input process. Please complete the survey no later than Tuesday, August 5th. National Night Out Against Crime
On Tuesday, August 5, 2014, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District in cooperation with the City of Parkland and Coral Springs Fire Rescue will be celebrating the National Night Out Against Crime at the Parkland Commons shopping center located at 8095 University Drive from 6pm to 9pm. National Night Out is a nationwide yearly event held on the first Tuesday in August which brings police agencies together with members of the communities they serve to raise awareness about crime prevention programs and to celebrate the successes of police – community partnerships that make our neighborhoods safer places to live. The BSO Bomb Squad and Canine units will in attendance along with a specialized BSO display car, a Coral Springs Fire Rescue display and some other surprises. Food and beverages will be provided through generous donations from Publix Supermarkets, Target Stores and BJ’s Wholesale as part of their commitment to safety in our community.

City of Parkland Wins Florida League Of Cities Municipal Achievement Award

The Florida League of Cities announced the following cities as winners of its 6th Annual Florida Municipal Achievement Awards:

“The goal of this program is to recognize innovations and excellence in municipal government,” said P.C. Wu, president of the Florida League of Cities and councilman for the City of Pensacola. “It is an honor to salute the winning cities for their outstanding programs with the coveted Florida Municipal Achievement Award.” The City Spirit Award is given to the winning city for a specific, single citywide effort to successfully address a local need. Winning cities will each receive a trophy and special recognition at a commission meeting, be featured in the League’s award-winning publication, Quality Cities (QC), and saluted on the League’s website and Facebook page. The City of Parkland’s entry titled Passport to Parkland was created to provide an enjoyable way for youth, teens, adults and seniors to learn about municipal government and the programs and services that are offered by the city. Founded in 1922, the Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. Its goals are to promote local self-government and serve the needs of Florida’s cities. Florida’s cities are formed by their citizens and governed by their citizens. The League is founded on the belief that local self-government is the keystone of American democracy.

Spots are limited!

Parkland Kids Camp is a summer recreation program for children ages 5 to 11 (kindergarten through grade 6). Children must be five years of age by June 16, 2014 to enroll in the program. The City of Parkland is presently accepting registration for both residents and non-residents. The camp location will take place at Park Trails Elementary School for all sessions and the hours of operation are from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM with extended hours available in the morning from 8:00-8:30am and in the afternoon from 4:00-5:30pm. The program consists of sports, arts & crafts, games, special on-site activities, and field trips. Rapids Waterpark Optional Summer Camp Trip - Register Now!

The City of Parkland Summer Camp Program will be holding their optional trip outing to Rapids Waterpark on Thursday, August 7, 2014 from 9am-4pm for all campers in grades 3 and up. The fee for this optional trip is $25 and includes admission, transportation and supervision. Payment is due on or before Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Payment can be made by check or credit card and parents are permitted to register and pay online. This trip goes rain or shine and there are no refunds available. Your child must be registered in the camp program in order to attend this optional trip.

The City of Parkland will be holding the AARP Driver Safety Course on Saturday, August 23 from 9:00am-3:00pm at Parkland City Hall. The AARP Driver Safety Course is a 6-hour refresher course that has helped millions of drivers sharpens their defensive driving skills. Participants of the course are generally 50 and older, but anyone is permitted to register for the course. All participants will receive a certificate and those 55 and older may be able to submit the certificate to their insurance company to receive a discount. The cost to attend the class is $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. Checks are written out to AARP. Advance Registration is required. The City of Parkland will be holding the 2014 Parkland Monster Dash 5K, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk presented by Northwest Medical Center to benefit SOS Children’s Village of Florida on October 25, 2014 at 7:00am. The race will take place at Pine Trails Park located at 10555 Trails End Parkland, Florida. To register, please visit www.cityofparkland.org/monsterdash. Pre-Registration must be completed by October 23rd or race day registration will be available beginning at 6:00am. Advance Packet Pickup can be done on Friday, October 24, 2014 at Pine Trails Park Amphitheater located at 10555 Trails End, Parkland, FL from 8am – 12pm or at Sports Authority located at 9188 Wiles Road, Coral Springs, FL from 3pm – 7pm. Advance Packet Pickup is strongly recommended. Participants can choose either a certified 5K course, 10K course or a 1 mile fun run/walk. 5K and 10K participants will be scored and timed by Accuchip who will be providing disposable tags for all participants. The one mile fun run/walk will be timed and can be enjoyed by individuals or families. Awards will be given for overall winners, masters and individual age groups. Registered participants also have to option to register for the costume contest. Awards will be given for the best costume in individual and group divisions. Strollers are welcome for all courses. Coast Guard Boating Safety Course

A concise 1-day course taught by the US Coast Guard, you will learn all about the Federal regulations in the State of Florida, seamanship, how a boat operates and how to handle one, how to load a boat so it balances properly, navigating in rough seas, proper docking and much more. Cost is $36 with multi-family member discounts available. All materials are included and participants will receive a certification card upon completion.
