City of Parkland Annual Scholarship Applications Now Available
The City of Parkland annually awards scholarships to Parkland residents for post-secondary education.  The scholarship is in recognition of outstanding community or civic service.  This scholarship is made possible through The City of Parkland, the Parkland Education Advisory Board and the Parkland Teen Advisory Group and is open to all Parkland students in public school, private school or homeschool students.  The completed application and all supporting materials must be received by 4:00pm on January 31, 2014. Mayor’s Top Teen Program
The City of Parkland is a community that values teens and promotes the positive impact they have in our City. This year the City of Parkland will once again honor a Parkland resident that stands out among the rest of his/her fellow students with the Top Teen Award. Students in the 9th, 10th, and or 11th grade may be nominated for this award. This program seeks nominees who have overcome obstacles and are good role models to other students and the community. Teachers, friends, counselors, clergy, and family members with the exception of parents, may nominate students they feel represent these values.  All Parkland students (public, private, and homeschooled) who meet the guidelines may be nominated to take part in this opportunity.  To download the application please click this link.  The application deadline is Friday, December 20, 2013.

Barkland Dog Park To Operate Under New Seasonal Schedule
Beginning Monday, November 25th, Barkland Dog Park is now open at 7:00am until Daylight Savings Time begins.  Closing time will continue to be at sunset

Environmental Program: Citizens Science Project

As a part of the City’s new environmental programs the Parkland Library presents the Citizens Science Project. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to collect data on the natural environment, planting native trees and shrubs. Come catch up with your Lord of the rings movie series as we enjoy fresh popcorn and watch “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” before you see “The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug in theaters. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey tells the story of a younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug. After the movie participants will get a chance to discuss their thoughts on the film and what to expect for the upcoming movie “The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug”. Adult Outdoor Bocce Ball

Presented by Northwest Medical Center

The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department and Northwest Medical Center present Adult Outdoor Bocce Ball. This activity is held the first Tuesday of each month from 10:00am to 11:30am in Pine Trails Park, 10555 Trails End, at field #5. Bocce is a terrific way to get outdoors, meet up with friends old and new, get a little exercise and socialize all together. Beginners and advanced players are welcome. Participants should wear flat shoes and bring water and sunscreen. There is no fee to play, all equipment is included and the activity is open to all those aged 21 and over. Advance registration is required and there is a limit of 16 participants. House Decorating Contest

The City of Parkland announces its annual Home Decorating Contest for Parkland Residents. On December 12, 2013 judging will take place by City Employees from 7:30pm-9:30pm. Think your home has the best seasonal decorations? Be sure to fill out the official entry form on our website at www.cityofparkland.org to enter your home for a chance to win dinner for four at a local Parkland Restaurant. All submissions must be turned in by December 9th and online voting will take place on our website as well. Concert in the Park-London Legends (Beatles and Foreigner Tribute Bands)

The City of Parkland and Northwest Medical Center are proud to announce London Legends a Beatles and Foreigner tribute band coming to the Parkland Amphitheater located in Pine Trails Park on December 7, 2013 from 7:00-8:30PM. The food trucks will be on site and begin serving food at 6:00PM.  Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to join your fellow parrot head friends and neighbors for this spectacular FREE family event and performance.  No tents, pets or alcoholic beverages are allowed within the park. Parkland Walkabouts Walking Program

Life is a walk in the park! The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department has a seven-month walking program sponsored by Northwest Medical Center.  This program aids participants in walking their way to an overall better fitness level and quality of life. The group meets on the first and third Friday each month at 9:00am, alternating monthly between Pine Trails and Terramar Parks. Participants will be rewarded for participation and are encouraged to walk on their own on other days. The program is free of charge and open to all aged 21 and over (no strollers please). Advanced registration is required; however you may join at any time. It’s that time of year already... let’s all celebrate the holiday season with our friends old and new, over a fun-filled pot luck lunch! This event is free of charge for Parkland residents aged 62 and over currently registered with Parks and Recreation. Participants are each required to bring a food dish and if they’d like, a grab bag gift valued at $10 to be in a grab bag - one for men and one for women. We'll supply all the rest. This year's theme will be... drumroll please: "Holidays in the Tropics." Get your island on and let's capture the laid back vibe of vacationing in the tropics right here in Parkland! In case of island rain, no worries - we'll party on in the activity room at City Hall. Winter Talent Showcase Auditions

The Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with Aston Gardens will be having our seventh annual Winter Talent Show for residents of Aston Gardens on Monday, December 9th from 7:15pm to 8:15pm. Auditions for the show are ongoing.  All ages and talents are welcome to audition to participate in this fun holiday event.  We are looking for people to perform by dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. You must register for a time slot to audition in advance and perform the act you would like to do in the show.  Participants are responsible for providing their own music. Coast Guard Boating Safety Course

A concise 1-day course taught by the US Coast Guard, you will learn all about the Federal regulations in the State of Florida, seamanship, how a boat operates and how to handle one, how to load a boat so it balances properly, navigating in rough seas, proper docking and much more. Cost is $36 with multi-family member discounts available.  All materials are included and participants will receive a certification card upon completion. The City of Parkland’s Teen Advisory Group will be holding their 4th semi-annual Car Wash on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 10AM to 1PM at the 7/11 Gas Station located on the corner of Westview Drive and University Drive in Coral Springs.  The donation will be $5 a car with all proceeds going to the City of Parkland's Teen Advisory Group. Senior Grant February Trip and Program Monthly Call-In Date

Calling all seniors interested in taking part in our fabulous February trip and program, mark your calendars and set your clocks, today is the call-in day and the competition is fierce! Please note, only 1 person or that person and their significant other is permitted on each call, there is no calling in for friends and calls received before 8:00am will be placed at the bottom of the queue, so be sure to watch the clock! February’s festivities include a wii class from 10:00am-11:30am on Wednesday, February 5th and a trip to Green Cay Nature Center on Tuesday, February 11th with lunch on your own at Two Georges or Banana Boat. Throughout the school year training classes will be held on CPR, first aid, fire extinguisher usage and more. We’re going to the Opera! Experience the anguish as the King of Babylonia destroys the Temple and forces the Hebrews from their homeland “Nabucco,” the opera that launched the spectacular career of Giuseppe Verdi, one of the greatest Italian opera composers. The curtain rises at 2pm and the show is 3 hours with 2 intermissions. If you love opera or have never seen it before, come and enjoy a lovely afternoon with us! Trip includes ticket and transportation. There is no meal involved in this day; feel free to pack snacks or buy at the concession stands and eat during an intermission. This trip is open to all those aged 50 and over, regardless of residency. Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis. Please come to the Parks and Recreation office to pay with cash or check, sorry no credit cards accepted for this program. Last day of sales is December 30, 2013 and there are no refunds. Barkland Dog Park To Operate Under New Seasonal Schedule

The Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with Aston Gardens will be having our seventh annual Winter Talent Show for residents of Aston Gardens on Monday, December 9th from 7:15pm to 8:15pm. Auditions for the show are ongoing.  All ages and talents are welcome to audition to participate in this fun holiday event.  We are looking for people to perform by dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. You must register for a time slot to audition in advance and perform the act you would like to do in the show.  Participants are responsible for providing their own music. The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department and Northwest Medical Center present Adult Open Lawn Croquet on Wednesday, November 20th from 10:00am to 11:30am in Pine Trails Park, 10555 Trails End, at field #4. Croquet is a fantastic way to get outdoors, meet up with friends old and new, get some exercise and socialize all together. Beginners and advanced players are welcome. Participants should wear flat shoes and bring water and sunscreen. There is no fee to play, all equipment is included and the activity is open to all those aged 21 and over. We’re going to the Opera! Experience the anguish as the King of Babylonia destroys the Temple and forces the Hebrews from their homeland “Nabucco,” the opera that launched the spectacular career of Giuseppe Verdi, one of the greatest Italian opera composers. The curtain rises at 2pm and the show is 3 hours with 2 intermissions. If you love opera or have never seen it before, come and enjoy a lovely afternoon with us! Trip includes ticket and transportation. There is no meal involved in this day; feel free to pack snacks or buy at the concession stands and eat during an intermission. This trip is open to all those aged 50 and over, regardless of residency. Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis. Please come to the Parks and Recreation office to pay with cash or check, sorry no credit cards accepted for this program. Last day of sales is December 30, 2013 and there are no refunds. Pre Registration Will Close For The 2013 Parkland Dash 5K,10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk On Thursday.  Day Of Registration Will Take Place Beginning At 6:00AM At Pine Trails Park On Race Day.
The City of Parkland will be holding the 2013 Parkland Dash 5K, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk Presented by Northwest Medical Center to benefit Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society on October 20, 2013 at 7:00am. The race will take place at Pine Trails Park located at 10555 Trails End Parkland, Florida. To register please visit www.cityofparkland.org and click on the race registration link. Pre-Registration must be completed by October 17th or race day registration will be available beginning at 6:00AM. Day of registration will take place beginning at 6:00AM at Pine Trails Park on Race Day.  Advance Packet Pickup is strongly recommended and can be completed at Sports Authority located at 9188 Wiles Road, Coral Springs, FL on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Participants can choose either a certified 5K course, 10K course or a 1 mile fun run/walk. 5K and 10K participants will be scored and timed by Accuchip who will be providing disposable tags for all participants. The one mile fun run/walk will be timed and can be enjoyed by individuals or families. Strollers are welcome for all courses. T-shirts will be provided for the first 400 pre-registered participants and food will be available following the race. Awards will be given for overall winners, masters and individual age groups. Teen Read Week (October 13-19), 2013 is a time to celebrate reading for fun while encouraging teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms —books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks and more! It is also a great opportunity to encourage teens to become regular library users.  The Parkland Library will celebrate Teen Read Week with giveaways and a fun aimed at encouraging teens to visit the library and read for the fun of it!  Middle and High School kids can come by the library during this week with their library card to pick up a gift and check out some great books.  On Friday, October 18th at 4:00pm teens are welcome to make a potion bottle that would be found in Harry Potter’s classroom or Frankenstein’s lab.  Parkland Library card required to register.  Register here or call (954)757-4207.

Lawyers In The Library

Lawyers and libraries are joining forces to increase your access to justice. During celebrate pro bono week,  Florida lawyers will be present at the Parkland Library to meet and speak with members of the public about issues of access to courts and justice. Lawyers will also provide guidance and information on referral to legal resources for attendees.  October 23 will be Pro Bono Day at the Parkland Library.  This totally free program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkland Library, 6620 N. The Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the YMCA will be having a Teen Halloween Dance. Teen’s ages 11-16 are invited to participated in this spooky event. The evening will consist of music, games, tattoos, fortunetelling, candy and more. Come dressed in costume for this event. Bring all of your friends. The event tickets will cost $7.00 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets will be sold at the Parkland Amphitheater, the YMCA and the Westglades Middle School Cafeteria. Forgotten Soldier Outreach Project

The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department hosted by the Teen Advisory Group will be participating in the Forgotten Soldier Outreach Collection Drive from Monday, October 28th to Thursday, November 14th.  Our goal is to continually encourage the men and women who are abroad fighting for our great nation. Our hope is to inspire hope, strength and courage while they are separated from loved ones, families and friends. The outreach is committed to the American soldiers for as long as they are deployed. Items needed include:  lip balm, dental floss, playing cards, slim Jims, batteries, travel toiletries. Parkland Walkabouts Walking Program

Life is a walk in the park! The City of Parkland Parks and Recreation Department has a seven-month walking program sponsored by Northwest Medical Center.  This program aids participants in walking their way to an overall better fitness level and quality of life. The group meets on the first and third Friday each month at 9AM, alternating monthly between Pine Trails and Terramar Parks. Participants are encouraged to walk on their own on other days and will be rewarded for participation. The program is free of charge and is open to all 18 and over. Registration is required; however, you may join at any time. (The next meeting time will be at 9AM on Friday, November 15th also at Pine Trails Park by the concession stand.) Healthy Lifestyles is a series of classes held quarterly on the first Wednesday of the month from 1:00-2:00pm in the activity room at Parkland City Hall. These classes are for adults 18 years of age and older and educate the audience and promote healthy living from a holistic approach. This quarter’s class, sponsored by Northwest Medical Center , features Cardiologist Dr. Craig Hostig and HCA East Florida Division Care Assure Program Director Barb Dale. Their topic is "Love Your Heart Better” and they will speak about learning how to be a step ahead of heart disease by practicing proactive heart care. City Lowers Millage Rate and Adopts 2013-2014 Budget

On September 18, 2013 the Parkland City Commission adopted the City's budget for fiscal year 2013-2014 with a reduction of the millage rate from 3.9999 to a new millage rate of 3.990.  According to Mayor Michael Udine, "We were able to reduce the millage rate without a loss of level of service to the residents, in fact we were even able to increase services in some City departments by operating in an efficient manner."  In addition, Parkland did not raise the Fire Assessment Fee.  The Budget authorizes the funding for all City activities and programs and provides funds for services that the residents of Parkland depend on, such as police, fire protection, youth programs and activities, street maintnenance, and the day-to-day operation of the City.

 


Registration Is Now Open For the 2013 Parkland Dash 5K,10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk
The City of Parkland will be holding the 2013 Parkland Dash 5K, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk Presented by Northwest Medical Center to benefit Relay for Life and The American Cancer Society on October 20, 2013 at 7:00am. The race will take place at Pine Trails Park located at 10555 Trails End Parkland, Florida. To register please visit www.cityofparkland.org and click on the race registration link. Pre-Registration must be completed by October 17th or race day registration will be available beginning at 6:00AM. Advance Packet Pickup is strongly recommended and can be completed at Sports Authority located at 9188 Wiles Road, Coral Springs, FL on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Participants can choose either a certified 5K course, 10K course or a 1 mile fun run/walk. 5K and 10K participants will be scored and timed by Accuchip who will be providing disposable tags for all participants. The one mile fun run/walk will be timed and can be enjoyed by individuals or families. Strollers are welcome for all courses. T-shirts will be provided for the first 400 pre-registered participants and food will be available following the race. Awards will be given for overall winners, masters and individual age groups. City Budget Public Hearings

Members of the public wishing to comment on the proposed City of Parkland fiscal year 2014 budget will have an opportunity to do so on September 12 and again on September 18.  The September 12th budget public hearings begin at 6:00 p.m. and the September 18th hearing begins at 7:00 p.m. and are held at the City of Parkland City Hall, 6600 University Drive, Parkland, Florida.  Based on the City Commission’s direction, the proposed total millage rate will decrease from 3.9999 to 3.99.

Smart Start Tutoring Program To Begin In Parkland

The Smart Start tutoring program is a free, volunteer run, tutoring program to be offered in the City of Parkland.  Smart Start was created to provide tutoring services for people who would not, or could not, typically pay for tutoring. Smart Start has been designed to be a supplemental program that will assist students to better grasp the subjects that they otherwise would find difficult to master.  The program, founded in 2013 by Stoneman Douglas High School students, Jillian Kass and Jacob Oster will provide tutoring services in Math, the Sciences and English initially, and hopes to expand their offerings to all subject matter as they grow and add new tutors to the program.  Tutoring will take place every other Saturday from 12:00pm – 3:00pm beginning September 21st.  To schedule an appointment for tutoring, please email Smart Start at pleasehelp@smartstartfl.com or to find out how to become a tutor please email iwanttotutor@smartstartfl.com.  Please visit their website at www.smartstartfl.com or if you have any questions and would like to speak with a Smart Start representative please email info@smartstartfl.com.

With football season coming right around the corner come show off your video gaming skills in the City of Parkland’s very own video game tournament with Madden NFL 2013 and battle with your favorite super heroes in Marvel vs. Capcom. Registration is first come first serve, limited to the first 40 people. Participants must be between the ages of 11 to 17 years old. Entry fee is $5 in advance, $7 the day of the tournament. Join the City of Parkland’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG) and become a leader in your community. Create the programs and experiences you would like to see offered in Parkland for teens. TAG meetings and activities are for students aged 14-18 years old and a great opportunity to help plan social events and obtain leadership skills while receiving volunteer service hours. Throughout the school year training classes will be held on CPR, first aid, fire extinguisher usage and more. AARP Driver Safety Program

The AARP Driver Safety Course is a 6-hour refresher course that has helped millions of drivers sharpens their defensive driving skills. Participants of the course are generally 50 and older, but anyone is permitted to register for the course. All participants will receive a certificate and those 55 and older may be able to submit the certificate to their insurance company to receive a discount. The cost to attend the class is $12.00 for members and $14.00 for non-members.  Checks are written out to AARP. Advance Registration is required. Healthy Lifestyles is a series of classes held quarterly on the first Wednesday of the month from 1:00-2:00pm in the activity room at Parkland City Hall. These classes are for adults 18 years of age and older and educate the audience and promote healthy living from a holistic approach. This quarter’s class, sponsored by Northwest Medical Center, features Cardiologist Dr. Craig Hostig and HCA East Florida Division Care Assure Program Director Barb Dale. Their topic is "Love Your Heart Better” and they will speak about learning how to be a step ahead of heart disease by practicing proactive heart care. Complimentary Danish, fruit, snacks, coffee and water will be served. Come start the month of October the healthy way with a relaxing yoga inspired fitness class. Parkland residents 62 and older are invited to experience a stress-free fitness class in which the basic yoga fundamentals will be taught. We’ll be outdoors and one with nature. Be sure to bring a water bottle, mat or beach towel, sunscreen and wear comfortable clothing. Registration can be done over the phone, by e-mail or in person at the Parkland Amphitheater. It’s getting close to game time! Who’s ready for some football? Join us as we watch the Miami Dolphins play the San Diego Chargers!!! Kickoff is at 1PM, but we will have an awesome time tail-gating before the game. Your upper level sideline ticket, bus transportation to and from the stadium and a private tailgate area for our group is all included for the amazing price of just $60. (Please bring your own food and drink, small grills are allowed on the bus). We need a minimum of 50 people aged 21 and over in order for the trip to go so invite your friends and family.
